Have you ever watched a chick-flick and heard one lover say to another, "I would do anything for you!"? Love is a powerful thing. Since God is love, He gave us a sense of love and a high respect for it. The most important reason He gave us that sense of love is so we can have a relationship with Him. It's a shame we have forgotten that.
We all know the big no PDA rule in schools. Teachers wagging their fingers at a hug, telling the kids to keep their hands to themselves. The public display of affection rule is more strict in some schools than it is in others. Regardless, schools have seemed to turn no PDA with peers to no PDA with God.
I think it's funny how most of the time it's hard to say whether a person goes to church or not. Some people display their relationship with Jesus proudly while others say they aren't as "religious" or "spiritual". They act as if their relationship with God is supposed to be confined to the church that they walk in every Sunday. That is far from the truth.
C.S. Lewis said that we are amphibians, we are half spirit and half animal. As spirits we belong to the eternal world, as animals we inhabit time. While our spirits are directed to an eternal object, our bodies, passions, and imaginations are constantly changing. Since we are half spirit and half animal, everything we do as an animal effects our eternity as spirits. It's not that anyone is more or less spiritual than anyone else, it's just a matter of recognizing and accepting their spiritual identity.
We have all taken advantage of our identities as animals, we grow as animals every waking (and sleeping) second on this earth. The fact of the matter is that if we don't take advantage of our spiritual identities we have lived out our identities as animals in vain. It is our responsibility to live our lives to their fullest and that is impossible if we ignore half of our being.
So how can you cultivate our spiritual identity? We can't. Many people have tried to grow spiritually by their own means with poor results. The only way we are able to grow spiritually is through God. Our spiritual essence exists because it is the only way for us to have a relationship with God. That is why God made us half spirit and half animals--to have a relationship with Him. The only way to grow our spiritual identities is to ask Jesus to live in our hearts and do it for us. Since we have free will, Jesus will only help us to grow spiritually--grow closer to God--if we want to. If we don't want to, He leaves our pitiful animal selves be.
On the other hand, if we do want it, we have to keep wanting it throughout our lives. The more we want God the more our relationship with Him grows. Now that this is happening, you are living out your life like Jesus would. What does such a life look like though?
What does one do when he is in an intimate relationship with his Creator? He reads the Bible like his life depends on it (because in a sense, it does) and he rejoices in gaining the breathed word of God. The truth that our Creator gave us the luxury of having our paws on. An intimate relationship also involves communication on our part--worship. Forms of worship like praying to God daily lets us bask in the purely awesome presence of God and focus entirely on Him. These things produce the fruit of the spirit.
It is also a Christian's duty to become as educated as possible about their relationship with God. We are called to making disciples of the earth, how are we supposed to do that if we don't have any knowledge of our own discipleship? If your relationship with God is really affecting your life you should be hungry for the knowledge that comes with your relationship with Jesus. You must be ready to answer any and every question that you are presented with about your God.
None of that knowledge matters if you don't apply it to your life and convert it to wisdom. You can know every Bible verse and every Christian doctrine by heart, but if you don't apply it to your life none of it matters because you have not gained any wisdom.
If your spiritual identity is being cultivated, it will have a hug impact on your identity as an animal on earth. People will notice the relationship you have with God. You may be referred to as a very "religious" or "spiritual" person, but do not let yourself be fooled. You don't have a religion, you have a relationship with the Son of God, and you are not spiritual, you just recognize your identity as a spirit. You must never forget your identity as half animal half spirit. You must never go with the crowd and apply the forbidden PDA rule to your relationship with God. If your relationship with God is growing, every action you make on this earth as an animal will reflect that. You will be undignified before your Creator.
